The game is set in Nazi-occupied Europe in 1943. The protagonist BJ Blazkowicz, a soldier of the U.S. Army, and another agent (named "Agent One" on Xbox and Mac) were sent to investigate a project of Heinrich Himmler, the SS Paranormal Division. But the two are captured and imprisoned in Castle Wolfenstein (based on the royal castle of Wewelsburg). One agent is killed during an interrogation by a torturer, but Blazkowicz can kill the soldier guarding his cell and prepares his escape. After leaving, the player must continue to investigate the Paranormal Division, which involves experiments with biotechnology, resurrection of corpses and secret weapons. Only the first two missions have a direct connection with Wolf 3D (involving the escape from the castle and zombie soldiers).
